International Labour Organization (ILO) Assistant Director General and Regional Director for Africa, Ms. Cynthia Samuel-Olonjuwon arrives in Zambia today to attend the annual Retreat for ILO Directors in Africa which will be held in Lusaka from 18 to 20 January 2023.

Prior to the Retreat, which is being held under the theme: ‘Delivering of the 2019 Abidjan Declaration for ILO constituents in Africa and implementation of the Global Coalition on Social Justice’, Ms. Samuel-Olonjuwon will hold high-level meetings with the Government and Tripartite partners among them; the Zambia Federation of Employers (ZFE) and the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU).

Social Protection Week takes place in Mozambique with ILO support

Between 21 and 27 November 2022, the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Action (MGCAS) of Mozambique organized the 11th consecutive annual Social Protection Week under the theme “Investing in social protection is investing in human capital.” The event received, as in previous years since the 1st Social Protection Week in 2012, technical and financial support of the ILO through the United Nations Joint Programme on Social Protection (UNJP-SP), financed by Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, and the Foreign & Commonwealth Development Office of the United Kingdom. It aims at giving visibility to social protection and serve as a space for debate and reflection for stakeholders, from national institutions to development partners, to civil society organizations and the public.

Advocacy on social protection targets Mozambican Parliamentarians

Between 18 and 19 April, around 45 parliamentarians from the Republic of Mozambique took part in an advocacy activity conducted by the Civil Society Platform on Social Protection with support from the European Union and the ILO. This activity had the goal of sensitizing legislators about key governmental interventions around social protection, particularly on the basic social security programmes administered by the National Institute of Social Action (INAS).
